Board of Trustees Profiles
Chris Griffiths – Chairman
I am very proud to have been on the BBI board for nearly ten years; I find being a trustee is an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable role. I understand my role as a trustee is a combination of looking forward by designing the future of the school, looking back and being accountable for BBI’s performance, acknowledging the requirements of BBI’s stakeholders (including the Crown and the community), and of course being a good employer. Our home is in Mellons Bay, and we have enjoyed full benefit of the wonderful local schools for our three children. I met my wife while working in Singapore, and our children are now all studying at University, in very different fields. At home, we proudly celebrate both our Kiwi and Singaporean culture.
Recently, I graduated from university with a Master of Business Administration. My major is in Operations and Management, and I am continuing my study through a Master of Philosophy at AUT. Through this study, I will research the experiences of individuals on successful work teams within New Zealand’s manufacturers. I work for New Zealand Post as a Senior Project Manager. My role has a strong focus on digital technology within their digital print manufacturing division based in Auckland and Christchurch. It is a role that draws on all my working and learning experiences from my original Trade Certificate in Typography to my more recent study at University.
The BBI board benefits by having a combination of longer-term Board members bringing the benefit of experience and reflection, and new Board members who bring new ideas, new curiosity and energy. This combination contributes to the success of the Board. I enjoy my work as a Trustee, working for the benefit of BBI’s community, together with our Principal Diane Parkinson, her Senior Leadership Team, and my fellow Trustees.
Graham Bodman – Inclusion & Property Portfolios
My wife Christine and I have lived in Bucklands Beach since 2003. I have had the honour of serving on the BBI Board since 2013, during which time our two children Penny and Nicholas have both experienced the incredible array of educational and character-building opportunities BBI has on offer. I have particular interest in promoting a school culture that values free thinking, wide-ranging inquiry, tolerance and citizenship. BBI is a school that genuinely strives to deliver its Mission to educate, guide and mentor all students to become successful, internationally minded, lifelong learners.
I am employed by Auckland Council as General Manager, Arts, Community and Events. Skills I can bring to the Board of Trustees include leadership, governance, valuing diversity and inclusion, project management, property management and development (from 18 years in the property sector) and financial analysis.
Anne Burgess – Staff Representative
It is a privilege to have been elected as the Staff Representative on the Board of Trustees by the staff of BBI. I have worked at BBI since 1999, beginning as a Year 8 teacher and becoming a senior teacher/team leader in 2008. Before coming to BBI I taught Years 2-4 for 5 years in NSW Australia, Year 4 for 4 years working in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea for the International Education Agency and 2 years teaching a Year 7/8 composite class at Kaitao Intermediate in Rotorua.
Living in Northpark, Botany, I have been happily married to my husband Steve, an electrician, for 38 years and have 3 adult children. Alana teaches at Somerville Intermediate, Glenn at Tyndale Park Christian School and Shae works for STAR insurance. So we have a few teachers in the family! All three passed through BBI for their intermediate school years and enjoying all the opportunities that BBI provided.
I love teaching and seeing students through their developing years to become independent learners and thinkers and caring, open minded citizens.
I bring to the board a teacher’s experience as I am still teaching in the classroom, and represent BBI’s teachers' perspectives and viewpoints.
Wendy Levy – Health and Safety
I have lived in Bucklands Beach since 2000, when I moved back to New Zealand with my husband Ellis. We have since had two children, one of whom started at Buckland Beach Intermediate in 2014. I work at an international consulting company as an Associate Director of Project Management, managing a range of projects within New Zealand and overseas. Prior to this I was the company’s Business Systems Manager, responsible for the Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety of over 350 staff working on projects from Siberia to the South pole.
Since enrolling my oldest child at Pigeon Mountain Primary School in 2007, I have been actively involved in the school community. I have served as both Secretary and Chairman of the Pigeon Mountain (PMPS) PTA, and played an active role in helping Pigeon Mountain to review and update their health and safety processes. I also attended the BBI School camp at Motutapu in 2014 as a parent helper.My children have different skills, abilities and learning needs, which has made me learn more about the best way to support them so they can achieve their goals. I believe that all students can succeed with the right support from parents, the school and other services as necessary.
I am delighted that I have been elected to the BBI Board of Trustees which will allow me to bring my skills and experience to help further the educational aspirations and goals of the school. My portfolio is health and safety.
ALAN FIGGINS – Strategic Planning and Finance
I look after the Strategic Planning and Finance portfolios for the Buckland Beach Intermediate Board of Trustees. I have previously served a primary school board, and I am also currently on the board of Macleans College. My background is in accounting, IT consulting, and management consulting. I am currently director of a consulting practice specialising in Strategic Planning, Leadership Development, Financial Management, and Governance.
As part of my role as a consultant I sit on, or attend, board meetings for a number of organisations, advising on the above areas, and providing independent oversight of their management and operations.
Over the years, I have also been a coach / manager for both the Howick & Pakuranga Cricket Club, and Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club. I am married with two children, and we have lived in the area for about twenty years.
LISA MULLIN – Personnel/EEO
I believe that children have different talents and learning needs, and that it is the role of a school to make all children feel welcome and to be able to challenge all children within the school and to meet their individual needs. I bring to the BBI Board of Trustees a wealth of business and governance experience. I have attended board meetings in a corporate environment for 12 years.
I am currently the Chief Executive of a national law firm, where I have overall responsibility for finance, IT, human resources and business development.I am a qualified lawyer and accountant and I am a member of the Institute of Directors. This is my second term on the BBI Board of Trustees. I have had previous roles, but I am currently responsible for the personnel portfolio and inclusion.
DIANE PARKINSON – Principal
I am very proud to be the Principal of Bucklands Beach Intermediate. My personal history began in a small NZ country town and I studied at Massey University in Palmerston North. I have enjoyed 29 years of teaching and learning in Auckland. My two boys are 11 years and 13 years old and attend a local schools.
I would value any member of the community to contact me about BBI. We can only enhance what we already do or improve what we already do when our local community provide us with feedback. Certainly, we will listen and do our best to make changes in the best interests of all students.
COLIN JAMES - Board Member
I have lived in Bucklands Beach for over 16 years with my wife, and our two daughters aged 11 and 8 years. Our oldest daughter has just started with BBI while our youngest is attending Mellons Bay Primary.
I am currently employed as the Head of Security for Vodafone NZ managing their internal technology security, regional cyber security operations, consumer and enterprise security offerings, and overall security strategy. However, my career began by joining the Royal New Zealand Air Force where I spent 11 years in the military on various deployments and operations.
I have also had a wealth of knowledge in the education sector, spending three years as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Westlake Boys' High School before returning to the private sector with a role with what was then Telecom/Gen-i as Security Operations Manager seven years ago. During the time at Gen-i I also managed the education offerings including the School Zone network which has since transformed into Spark's Network for Learning.
I hold a role as a current board member of Netsafe, and a keen advocate of online safety and digital parenting. Outside of work I can be seen at the Auckland Observatory where I am involved in public lectures on basic astronomy and celestial navigation.
